Batik Fashion Show - Kuala Lumpur

Other backstage pictures can be found here.

This is an entry of a batik Fashion Show where I choreographed during the Klang Valley Kaamatan Celebration in Kuala Lumpur. It was all in a rush as I was informed only a week before the event. I also have to arrange the music for the catwalk so I rushed to the recording studio to have it all arranged. The KL counterpart will find Sabahan models for the show and to my surprise all the models eventhough first timers they are indeed fast learners and at the end of the show everything went well!, superb to be exact! Part of this article will be featured in a local magazine which I will notify you ols in my next entry. The Fashion Show showcases the latest batik collection featuring batik designs of various motifs of the Rungus and Murut ethnic communities, as well as, the richness of Sabah’s plant diversity especially the slipper’s and borneon orchids.
The material used for the collection ranges from high quality fuji cotton mixed with rayon, silk, jacquered satin and chiffon. The collection comes in full array of soft pastel palette ranging from silkish white to light yellow and green. Apart from loose materials, the batik collection also showcases ready to-wear collection consist of butterfly-shaped blouses and house wear craftans catered for young urban ladies, and short sleeves for men. The butterfly-shaped blouse shows a traditional motif belonging to the Murut ethnics known as sumandak (translated as ‘young girl’) symbolizing an ethnic identity of Murut girls or teenagers. Whereas, the motif used on the men’s wear collection is called nantapuan which means ‘unity’. Most of the ready-to-wear craftans had motif designs of plant species diversity found in Sabah ranging from rare and endemic orchid species, such as the slipper’s and borneon orchids, and the periuk kera or monkey’s ear plants. The loose materials, which were also featured during the fashion show, had various designs combining traditional ethnic motifs and plant species of Sabah. Suitable for making batik long-sleeves for men and evening gowns, baju kurung or kebaya for women, these loose materials are available in silk, jacquered satin and chiffon materials.
